Youth mentorship has been proven to have lasting positive effects on both the mentor and the mentee. Kids who grow up with mentor role models do better in school and more often than not, avoid delinquency. But what entails being a youth mentor and what do you provide to these kids?
Read on to learn more about the ins and outs of mentorship.
Developing Core Competencies
Being a mentor to a young man or woman entails helping them to develop core competencies in various aspects of their life; socially, academically, mentally, spiritually, and even career wise. These young people often come from situations where they aren’t taught how to put forth the effort to be competent in their responsibilities. You would offer them words of wisdom and your experience to teach them how they can have a positive view of themselves.
Having a sense of self-worth and identity is something we tend to take for granted. As a mentor, you will help kids develop confidence in themselves and their actions. If they’re into sports, music, or even poetry, going to their events and cheering them on in their successes and failures will stoke a confidence in them that will last a lifetime.
Creating a Connection
Many of the kids we work with lack healthy relationships and experience a lot of instability. Fostering positive bonds between the children and their schools, parents, friends, and community is invaluable in helping them to become positive members of society. As a mentor, you would facilitate this connection by contributing to their communal bonds; being active in their interests.
So often, a sense of morality and a respect for right and wrong escape the young people we mentor. Teaching them respect for laws and rules while maintaining their integrity is something we believe is an invaluable trait to mold them into people of character.
